Emergency Covid-19 Food Response

Last year when COVID19 hit Sinkunia like any other organization who relies on both government private sources of funding had it tough. All our programs became affected coupled with the long stretch of lock down. Thankfully another new door opened for us. With the help of the Canadian Red Cross and COVID-19 Emergency Support for Community Organizations Grant, we have had funding to support all our programs and one new program - Seniors Care, delivered food and essential household items to one thousand individuals from 326 families.

What is more exciting is that our participants have increased in numbers and parents have become more involved, given positive support to our youth and children during zoom sessions. Starting from August 2020 to the end of December 2020. Sinkunia have been able to support families within our own community and beyond. The grant support also helped us to deliver 15 Tablets to 11 youth ambassadors and 4 program facilitators.

When our funding run out, the calls for help for food and other household essentials did not seize. Our team of community volunteers continue to use the Edmonton Foodbank resource to continue to support the families on weekly bases.

Another important area where this funding support has been helpful is our weekly engagement sessions with our youth and children. We have had presentations from Youth Mental health, Racism, issues bothering around the almighty COVID-19 pandemic. The little ones have also been busy using different means of art to create awareness and to add their voices to what is happening in our world. As the old saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ please come feast your eyes on our photos and video lab.
